SF to LA, the Final Day

I couldn't wait to leave SF.  My friends and I were all feeling a bit down from several days of intensive eating.  I'm still feeling a bit under the weather, but back to reality we went.  Before leaving we decided to drop by Cheung Hing for a bit of congee, but ended up ordering two plates of mixed Canto BBQ.  Cheung Hing has been a main staple for my friend who basically grew up eating there.  I can say without a doubt that it was some of the best Canto BBQ i've had and I think that really had to do with the fast turnaround time of their meats.  Everything sold fairly quickly which meant that meat wasn't left under heat lamps to lose their oils and dry up.  The pork was all moist and tender and fatty, and that's the way bbq pork should be.

Next up was Hollow Cafe for a bit of coffee.  I had way too much Blue Bottle while in SF, and I was just craving a good cup of a cold brew.  Hollow is a tiny little cafe that may fit a maximum of 8 people, but it's filled with random little items like flasks and cigar holders and homemade marshmallows.  It has a really nice boutique feel to it and reminded me a lot of Seattle.  It's a total shame that all these cool little spots aren't in LA.  It was a nice little stop before the endlessness of the 5 freeway where I sat around taking pictures out the back of my car while my friend drove.

Having finally got back to LA, we decided to make a stop at Yabu for a nice and easy meal of soba.  I definitely got way more food than I had expected, but it was a good solid meal.  It's a little weird being back in LA.  I'm physically still recuperating from my mini vacation in SF, but mentally i'm pushing myself back to work mode.  Now i'm looking forward to roaming around Taiwan and Japan in December as well as bringing back www.allidoiseat.com.  Look forward to updates soon!

The Ferry Building, a New Friend, and some Random Stuff

One of the great places to eat has more than one place to eat.  The Ferry Building is the food court foodie dreams are made of filled with fresh bread, Italian meats, huge selections of cheeses, fresh seafood, and more.   So of course, making a stop there was a must.  The first necessity was some freshly shucked oysters.  It's just a great light way to start the day.  Next off was Boccalone to order a bit of Italian meats.  A plate of prosciutto and some other meats and we were off for some bread at Acme bread and some Gouda at Cowgirl Creamery.

The best part of a la carte foods at the Ferry building is being able to grab a table overlooking the ocean and the Bay Bridge.  It can be a bit annoying being surrounded by onlookers of both the human and aviary variety, but the view and the food make it completely worthwhile.sa

Wayfare Tavern

Chef Tyler Florence runs Wayfare Tavern in the Financial District of SF, so that was a necessary stop.  The meal started with a caesar salad that included some sardines and runny poached egg.  Each bite had a bit of rich saltiness with a touch of tang; this is how every salad should be balanced rather than just being drenched in dressing.  Next came the Kobe Tartare topped with an egg yolk and served with a side of a puff pastry topped with a pesto and cilantro sauce.  This is one of the best things I have ever eaten and nearly warranted an additional order.

The next two dishes of string beans and mushroom ravioli were good, but nothing to rave about.  The string beans were surprisingly good while the ravioli was a little too rich for my taste.  The coup de gras was the Poutine.  Each bite just melted in my mouth.  It reminded me of an amazing beef pot pie from my childhood and nearly brought tears to my eyes.  The fries just melded with the beef and sauce creating a perfect balance of salty and creamy.  The poutine and the kobe tartare are reason enough for me to return to SF.  The meal was finished off with some complimentary small bites of a coffee cake leaving me completely blown away.  The service was great, the atmosphere was relaxed, and Wayfare is just a great stop for some very good food.

A little while ago I was hired to shoot a look book for a Hong Kong based designer label.  Got to work with my favorite people including Crystal Tran ( www.beautybycrystal.com ) and Juliet Vo ( www.julietvo.com ) as well as my trusty right hand man Jeffrey Lin.  These are some of the shots that we produced.  The set was shot with ah Hasselblad H2 with P45+ back provided by Rick Rose my digital tech.
